The two people who own the practice are the two people who supervise you. Chris Withnall and Karen Williams are both accredited supervisors with RACGP and ACRRM, both work in the rooms, and both have a direct stake in whether your term goes well. Chris keeps at least two days a week in the practice free of his own consulting, for supervision and running the practice, so a supervisor is available in the building and not only between patients.
We have trained GP registrars continuously since the early 2000s, when regional GP training began in South Australia, through the regional training organisations and into college-led training. Both sites hold current RACGP and ACRRM training-post accreditation.
The medicine is broad because the geography makes it so. Gumeracha and Lobethal sit in the northern Adelaide Hills, about 50 minutes from the Adelaide CBD. Our patients bring the full span of general practice: chronic disease, mental health, children, antenatal care, skin surgery, occupational health, palliative care, and the acute presentations that arrive when the nearest emergency department is a long drive. You will see them all, with a supervisor down the corridor.
We both came to Gumeracha as registrars, Karen on the RACGP pathway and Chris on ACRRM, and we both stayed. The reason was the culture of the place: the way the senior doctors taught, the range of medicine, and the patients. Now we own the practice, and passing that experience on to trainees is the part of the job we take most pride in. Several of the doctors consulting here now also arrived as registrars or through IMG pathways and chose to stay.
Both sites are accredited for AGPT terms on the RACGP and ACRRM streams. We also hold RACGP Fellowship Support Program site agreements for both practices and support the Practice Experience Program and the Practice-Focused Pathway, so international medical graduates working towards Fellowship have a supervised route here as well.
Registrars get their own consulting room wherever the roster allows, a fully equipped procedure room, Best Practice software, experienced practice nurses, and a co-located pathology collection centre. Teaching is in-practice and structured to your training plan, with formal teaching time protected in the week.

We proudly hosted interns under the Road2Rural program with RDWA from 2022 to 2026. Some chose rural GP training as a direct result of training with us, and have returned as registrars.
We have taken Flinders University students on placement for many years. Students sit in with the GPs, take histories and examine under supervision, and see the continuity that a hospital placement cannot show you: the same patient, over months, managed by the same doctor.

Graduated 2000, then worked across rural and remote Australia in emergency and surgery before general practice. Trained in rural South Australia, completed his surgical Advanced Specialised Training at Modbury Hospital, and finished his Fellowship at Gumeracha, fellowing with ACRRM in 2013. Interests in healthy ageing, sports and injury rehabilitation, weight management, and skin surgery including flaps and grafts. Supervises registrars at both sites.

At Gumeracha since 2012 after several other rural practices, and a Fellow of the RACGP since 2013. Interests in women’s health and child health, and in the whole-of-family general practice that a small community makes possible. Co-owner of the practice since 2022.
Gumeracha is a main-street town in the northern Adelaide Hills. Lobethal is ten kilometres east. Adelaide is about 50 minutes, Modbury 25 and Mount Barker 35, which means most registrars have commuted rather than moved. The practices service a catchment of about 10,000 people and a patient base of about 6,000, so the population is small enough that you will know your patients and large enough that you will not run out of medicine to learn.
The practice is a private company owned by two of its GPs, with a mix of tenant doctors and employed doctors, experienced practice nurses, and a practice manager who has run registrar and intern placements for years. Standard consulting hours are 9 am to 5 pm weekdays, with an occasional Saturday morning. There is no on-call roster and no inpatient work.
In the 2025 Practice Accreditation and Improvement Survey run independently by CFEP Surveys, 320 Gumeracha patients and 70 Lobethal patients rated the practices. Overall satisfaction was 94 per cent at both sites, and 94 per cent of Gumeracha patients and 93 per cent of Lobethal patients said they would recommend the practice. Gumeracha scored in the top quartile on all 28 questions against practices of the same size and remoteness classification, and on 27 of the 28 against all Australian practices.

You will be training in a practice patients trust. That matters more than it sounds: patients who trust the practice extend that trust to the registrar, and a registrar who is trusted learns faster.
